Blackpaw Society on Danny Michel’s “White Lightning” and “Old Tattoo”:
I’ve seen Danny Michel play live many times. One of the things I find most interesting about his live performance is that sometimes it’s just him solo on the stage with a guitar, and sometimes he’ll have a full band, and depending on what “version” of him you see, his songs take on different shapes and shades, yet he always manages to create a strong connection to his audience.
I chose to cover two of his songs [“White Lightning” and “Old Tattoo”] in a weird medley of sorts, because I thought it would be a nice contrast to show how he approaches the same subject matter but from opposing views. One has venom and bite in its delivery, from a voice that’s happy to be free; the other is beaten down and weary, [like] someone left behind.
Blackpaw Society’s medley of Danny Michel’s “White Lightning” and “Old Tattoo” will be available as a free download on June 30, 2017, as part of DOMINIONATED IV, our fourth compendium of Canadian songs covered by Canadian artists.
