It totally hurts to turn the radio on these days; the TV, the phone, and the computer, too, for that matter. And newspapers, though you can’t really turn those on, per se. I’m tired of being in the present and constantly thinking that it was better to live in the past. It’s this same sense of “life on pause” that makes Metric’s “Now or Never Now” a refreshing, palate-cleansing tonic. The song offers up a state-of the-nation commentary that’s less about rebellion than it is our collective futility to resist the downward spiral of crap our toilet-bowl society is stuck in.
That “fuck it, it’s too far gone for anything we say to make a difference now” attitude is so honest and refreshing. We’re all feeling it, but no one wanted to be the first to admit defeat, or at the very least, indifference. Emily Haines says it’s time to “take the remorse out of defeat” and I can’t agree more. There’s something to be said for realizing when the fight is over and that it’s not due to a lack of trying. At some point you need to concede that, in order to make it to a better future, you have to stop lamenting about the past. And if we’re being honest with ourselves, that time is now.
