Dreams should come with warning stickers that say “FRAGILE: Handle With Care” or at the very least, “AVOID EXPOSURE TO THE REAL WORLD”. It takes nothing for a dream to go from being a remote (yet possible) reality to a pile of shards littering your psyche.
On “Trip Ads”, the first sampling from Victoria BC natives Jons’ new album At Work On Several Things, it’s hard to say exactly what state the aspirations of the narrator are in, a struggling actor, are in. Ever the eternal optimist, our storyteller sounds convinced that what hasn’t killed them yet will only make their resolve for success stronger. Still, you get the sense our narrator is keenly aware that whatever resiliency they once had has been beaten out of them by the elusiveness of fame and success.
Jons’ effortless psychedelic pop is equal parts delicate and determined. Never sounding forced, the foursome finds a loose groove and rides it through the winding storyline of their tenacious thespian. Even when it all starts to unravel by song’s end, musically, Jons are in complete control.
