"Anything Anything"

The Holiday Crowd

The biggest blight on popular music writing is the dreaded RIYL comparison. It is convenient, and can convey paragraphs worth of information in a single statement, but it saddles an artist with a cross they don’t necessarily deserve. History has demonstrated repeatedly that jangly guitars and wispy male vocals work hand in glove together, but to burden Toronto band the Holiday Crowd with any further comparisons to other bands with a similar musical heritage isn’t doing them any favours.

Like an impassioned sigh, “Anything Anything” is heavy on melody and melodrama. Familiar memories may emerge as it fades in on your headphones, but as the summery song settles into its groove, what really stands out is how the Holiday Crowd expertly dip and dart through complicated musical and lyrical interplay. They erase borders between chorus and verse with ringing high-hats and chiming guitar riffs and draw a new musical topography. You’ll recognize landmarks, but it’s clear the Holiday Crowd is approaching them from new directions. You’ve heard this before, sure, but don’t let that stop you from basking in the warm sun and breezy air of the Holiday Crowd’s charming manners.

Recommended if you love great pop.
