Ever since hearing Winnipeg duo À La Mode on Grey Records’ Grey Matter compilation earlier this year, I haven’t been able to get the curiously mesmerizing “Est-ce qu’on s’aimera” out of my head. Members Dominique Lemoine and Ava Glendinning blend frosty synth chords and sugar-spun harmonies to heavenly effect.
A rough English translation of the song’s name is “will we love each other,” a decidedly ambiguous title. Are À La Mode making a declarative, imperative or interrogative statement? I’m relishing the wondering and hope to high heaven I never find out.
