Believe it or not, but there’s more to my musical predilections than just sounds from north of the 49th parallel. I spent most of the 90s loving all things UK, from Adorable to Zero 7 and everything in between. While many of those acts are now a blip in history (hello, Menswear), some, like my beloved Saint Etienne, are still a going concern.
There’s a lot about Montreal’s Anemone (aka artist Chloé Soldevila) that reminds me of Saint Etienne. The pristine sparkle that radiates out of her new song “Baby Only You & I” evokes other purveyors of ’60s-inspired pop. The Line of Best Fit made similar connections to Saint Etienne when it debuted “Baby Only You & I” earlier this month. The song’s galvanizing hook fastens itself to your subconscious, tightly drawing you into its orbit while its motorik rhythm makes it near impossible to keep your hips still.
How fitting that Luminelle Records, a partnership between Gorilla Vs. Bear and Fat Possum/House Arrest Records, is releasing Baby Only You & I EP, Anemone’s first sugary sweet musical confection for the label, on a cotton-candy-pink cassette.
