“*69,” “Spotlite”

Born at Midnite

Amery Sandford (of BBQT) and David Carriere (of TOPS) have been collaborating as Born at Midnite since 2018, crafting deliciously addictive alt-pop out of samplers, tape machines (and dog barks?), and an undisputable musical acumen.

It’s tempting to brand the duo’s latest pair of tracks as throwbacks. Given how antiquated the idea of dialling Star 69 is with today’s smart technology, “*69” the song is practically bubbling over with retro vibes courtesy of its slinky funk groove. “Spotlite” ups the ante with its seductive synth melody and 80s-inspired melodrama. It’s a Pet Shop Boys-worthy performance that’s subtle, sexy, and slightly tongue-in-cheek.
