Kingo Halla’s EP, Reflections is a beautiful way to forget you exist for a while.
Kingo Halla, hailing from humble Owen Sound, Ontario, has created a lush EP with dreamy sounds. This EP makes me forget I exist for about fifteen minutes; everything else melts away while I listen.
First out of the gates is “Growing Pains.” It’s the perfect introduction, bringing in the filtered vocals that will appear throughout the rest of the EP. The song cycles through a few different moods while remaining coherent. The choruses bring so much energy it is impossible to sit still.
The title track, “Reflections,” showcases Kingo Halla’s command and control over his voice. It sounds so delicate and pairs beautifully with the gentle instrumentals that support it until the end.
So many different things pull the listener’s attention in “Hotel,” but they all come together in the choruses and through the verses. This push and pull brings you back to solid ground before sweeping you off your feet again in waves.
“Said So” tells a story through the lyrics and small sounds added in. The echoes in the background, the breaking of glass, knocking on doors, a car driving by—I might be mistranslating those last two. The final solo before the outro is full of raw emotion that gets drawn back to prepare the listener for the final track.
Something about the simplicity of the piano and soft vocals at the start of “Portrait” gives me chills every time I hear it. The rest of the band kicks in, and it’s like sinking into the bottom of a pool and watching the ripples of the water above you. It feels peaceful, subliminal, even a bit sobering.
