In just a couple of short years, DijahSB has become our go-to for feel-good jams that radiate with their own personal style and pizzazz. After last year’s Polaris Music Prize-shortlisted Head Above the Waters, DijahSB has become synonymous with summertime sing-a-longs. Though they dropped “Dance Like This” late in August, the sparkling tune — another feather in their ever-crowded caps — is a strong contender for my favourite song of Summer 2022.
“Dance Like This” finds DijahSB sounding sunny and assured, comfortable in their skin and owning their space. Pairing up again with producer Cheap Limousine, “Dance Like This” is instantly familiar. A slick, dsco/funk dance beat lays the groundwork atop which DijashSB spits bars in their signature rapid-fire style. Their phrasing and stop-start pacing is now a hallmark of their sound. If there’s any criticism about “Dance Like This,” it is that it’s over too soon. At a brisk 2:33, the track fades out just when I want it to get going. It’s almost as if DijahSB is afraid of wearing out their welcome. If that’s the case, they have nothing to worry about: as long as they keep pumping out jams like this, we will be dancing for days to come.
