Maïa Davies
“Car Crash”

Ever since transporting my record player to the living room (and consequently playing everything I listen to), I’ve heard countless complaints from my mom that the music I play is what constantly makes me sad – that I can’t expect to draw myself out of melancholy when I always seek it out. I am not ashamed to admit the allure of putting myself into that dark hole. Still, often the reason I find I’m drawn to particularly devastating songs is not because I’ve succumbed to the wallowing but rather because I’ve found the desire to swim against it. Songs that pierce your heart are the ones that I believe create a pinhole of hope in the fishbowl, which is true of Maïa Davies‘s work. “Car Crash” is captivatingly sad but, more importantly, songs that seek to let the light in.

In the genuine and honest lyrics that pour out over the three-minute tune, Davies expresses her journey to personal healing during a period of immense personal struggle. Her beautiful voice’s delicate nature matches the song’s fragility, and a heart calloused in grief. As I listened, I could feel my own past hurt and fears of abandonment rise. Still, against the comforting backdrop of Davies’ vulnerability, the lyrics are a silent refrain of hope.

The music video, directed by Trust! (Rich Misener) manages to strike a delicate balance between catharsis and intensity. With its eerily sparse and dimly lit visuals, Davies remains the focal point throughout, carrying us through the emotional journey. Her words penetrate the darkness, illuminating any room like a flickering light. “Car Crash” (alongside previously released single, “O.K. I’m Not O.K.”)  serves as a powerful preview of Davies’ forthcoming album, scheduled for release in 2024, promising a compelling and evocative musical experience to come.
