DOMINIONATED’s PRESS PLAY artist for December is Fort Laurie, the solo project of singer-songwriter Cole Levesque. He recently released his debut, Encouraging Words for a Long Winter, and today shares a track that also springs from the well of inspiration that informed his album. Here’s Levesque in his own words about “Pale”:
Much like the album it follows, Encouraging Words for a Long Winter, “Pale” is an exploration of obsession and dysphoria, navigating through the words and images that consume me in quiet moments. A lapse in hope and a dance with loss, this song marks the end of a period of my life that has both broken and driven me.
The artwork for the song is a photograph I took with my late aunt Lorry’s Pentax K1000 film camera. I must have been 15 years old when I took the photo, watching the birds circle streetlamps and rooftops overhead. One bird separated from the flock, making the photograph. It was the same camera I used to photograph the out-of-focus carnival rides that make up the cover of Encouraging Words for a Long Winter. Both days were clouded and wet from yesterday’s rain, windy from the arrival of fall. I still use her camera often.
