This month’s PRESS PLAY featured artist is singer-songwriter, vocalist, and rhythm guitar player, Kyla Charter. A Toronto native, Charter’s CV includes playing with the likes of Patrick Watson, Alessia Cara, Zaki Ibrahim, July Talk, and the Queer Songbook Orchestra, as well as a number of internationally-based musicians and artists.
Earlier this year, she released her solo debut, Edible Flowers, and for her PRESS PLAY offering, “Let It Go,” Charter offers some insight into her process by sharing two versions of the song that chart her songwriting evolution:
“I have two versions of “Let It Go,” a song I’m working on for you. One is the original demo that is an example of my process, trying out ideas in real-time and building on top of them, some good and some more questionable. The “demo” version starts with about a minute and a half of free-form vocal meditation and transitions into my building on some ideas with three-part harmony, very rough stuff. The second version is what my producer pieced together from it, finding a hook and making it a little more cohesive. It’s nowhere near finished, but there are some good bones to chew on.”
